Techniques & the Session

About the Session

At each session, we will discuss your current needs and any areas where you desire attention (and any areas you wish for me to avoid).  Some common areas people often desire for tension relief are the head, neck, shoulders, face, heart/sternum/or upper chest area, hands, arms, hips, glutes (buttocks), legs and feet. Chinese medical massage (TuiNa) may also incorporate work on the spinal column, ribcage, and abdomen to stretch and move body tissues and aid digestion.

Intake Appointment

Please plan for our first appointment to take an extra half hour to fill out intake paperwork and go over your health history together while also receiving your full session time on the table. We talk about your main concerns and what your goals are for bodywork therapy. We decide on a plan of action together of what techniques or approach may be most appropriate for you.

The Session is Adjustable for Your Needs!

It is of highest priority to me that people feel empowered to voice their needs at all times in the work we are doing together. As a client, you are at choice in every moment, and I feel that this communication is a critical part of creating a space of safety and healing. I invite clients to communicate your needs throughout the session, whether that be an adjustment in temperature of the table, changing the amount of pressure or a specific technique I am using, or letting me know places on the body that you do not want to be touched (we will go over this at the beginning of the session as well). Sometimes a particular part of the body may feel vulnerable, or there may be emotion arising associated with a particular area.

Clothing/What to Wear

Please wear soft, comfortable clothing.

Communication With Other Health Professionals

Massage/bodywork therapists are not licensed to diagnose injuries or illnesses or to give psychological treatment or advice, rather our work is meant to compliment the support you are already receiving from a doctor, psychotherapist, or other forms of spiritual and emotional guidance. If you are under the care of a psychotherapist or doctor, there are some circumstances where I may wish to consult with them before we begin working together (with your permission) to ensure that receiving this type of bodywork would be beneficial for you.

Partnership Between Massage Therapist & Client

I encourage clients to place mindfulness on breathing during a session, using the breath as a tool to bring fresh oxygen to the body and brain, and to aid in releasing tension. Deep breathing throughout the session is a way that you can naturally tell your body to relax and release. The most benefit is produced in this way with a partnership between therapist and client. Training your body to relax and feeling what it feels like to be in a state of relaxation can also help to maintain your own ability to produce greater relaxation on your own at home. At times, I may ask you to take a deep in and out breath as I work on a particular area of tension.

Tardiness & Cancellation Policy

I ask for 24 hours notice if you need to cancel an appointment. 50 percent payment is due for appointments canceled with less than 24 hour notice. Exceptions are made for emergencies, including sudden illness. If you develop a contagious condition, please call or text me to reschedule at no charge. Clients who arrive more than 15 minutes late to an appointment are asked to reschedule.

If you have any questions or concerns before we meet or at any time during the session, please let me know.

This time is dedicated to you in support of your greatest well-being!
